She wrote:

In the wake of this summer’s protests against the murder of George Floyd, the city of Buffalo bloomed with signs. In neighborhoods across the city, signs on businesses, houses of worship, and near homes proclaimed solidarity, consideration for Black lives, and the need to vote. As I indexed this form of public speech, I also looked at the transformation of the outdoors into a living room and place for safely coming together and crossing paths.
