Urban Omnibus: Portfolios
An exhibition of photographic commissions from ten years documenting the collective work of citymaking.
November 8, 2019—February 7, 2020
Friday afternoons 1:00–5:00 p.m.
Over the last decade, Urban Omnibus has documented the collective work of citymaking. We’ve chronicled how New York City is given form by a wide range of people: Designers, engineers, artists, activists, administrators, and people going about their daily lives all bring their creativity and commitment to the transformation of the environment we share. Much of their work can be hard to see. Accustomed to visualizations of future megaprojects and photographs of freshly inaugurated buildings, we are less likely to notice, as we walk down the street, how buildings, landscapes, policies and programs, and infrastructural systems shape the urban environment.
Photography is a form of research, a way to understand how the structures and systems we build shape our experience every day. The photographic portfolios commissioned by the editors of Urban Omnibus look closely at the city we think we know and the city we don’t much think about. In the projects on view, architectural photographers, artists, and designers capture the give and take of social life and urban space.
Urban Omnibus: Portfolios features the work of Anna Beeke, Sebastian Bernardy and Vincent Meyer Madaus, Cameron Blaylock, Kris Graves, Stanley Greenberg, Amy Howden-Chapman, David Lang, Nicholas Pevzner, Anna Shteynshleyger, Jules Slütsky, Ben Stechschulte, Rob Stephenson, and Amani Willet.
