League Prize Winner Bio

Pelletier de Fontenay

The League Prize, an annual competition that asks young designers to respond to a given theme, has marked an important milestone in many architects’ careers. Winners showcase their work through a lecture series and exhibition.

Hubert Pelletier & Yves de Fontenay were winners of the 2016 competition.

Founded in 2010 by Hubert Pelletier and Yves de Fontenay, Pelletier de Fontenay is an architectural practice based in Montreal. The studio is “specifically interested in the relationship between the abstract concepts of architecture and their material incarnations.”

Recently, Pelletier de Fontenay, in partnership with Kuehn Malvezzi and Jodoin Lamarre Pratte, was named one of the winning teams in the international competition to design educational buildings for the”Espace pour la Vie” museum campus in Montreal. Their winning Insectarium of Montreal is scheduled for completion in 2017. In the same competition, the team was recognized as one of four finalists for their Botanical Garden Glass Pavilion. Pelletier de Fontenay has also designed entryway signage for Montreal’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport and numerous private residences built throughout Quebec.

Last year, Pelletier de Fontenay was awarded a Phyllis Lambert grant to pursue research on their Insectarium of Montreal project. Their Ourboros House was awarded the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence in 2013, and the studio received research grants in 2010 and 2013 from the Quebec Arts and Letters Council. In 2009, Hubert Pelletier received a Deborah J. Norden travel grant from The Architectural League of New York, which resulted in his report, “The Stereotomy of Complex Surfaces in French Baroque Architecture.”
