Standing Strong

Douglas Crisp captures moments of tension and calm in New York City in 2020.

Shifting Ground was an open call for visual reports about how the events of 2020 and 2021 reconfigured our relationship with both public and private space. Select entries were posted on the League’s Instagram account.

Douglas Crisp submitted photographs taken in Brooklyn and Queens between April and August 2020.

He wrote:

In these photos, I wanted to capture the difference in atmosphere from neighborhood to neighborhood: moments of high tension during the Black Lives Matter protests in central Brooklyn mixed with seemingly life-as-usual scenes in outer areas of the city.

I also wanted to highlight moments of hope and creation during quarantine and lockdown, whether figurative—Lady Liberty standing strong amongst a gathering storm—or literal, as in the DIY-style skate structures built throughout the city when skateparks closed.
