No Amusement

Evan Chiang and Julian Yang visit a deserted Coney Island in summer 2020.

Shifting Ground was an open call for visual reports about how the events of 2020 and 2021 reconfigured our relationship with both public and private space. Select entries were posted on the League’s Instagram account.

Evan Chiang and Julian Yang documented a missed summer of classic New York fun.

They wrote:

This is an excerpt of images taken for our first-semester history project in a course taught by Tony Vidler at The Cooper Union. It documents our exploration of Coney Island during a pandemic that emptied it. There will probably never be another time when Coney Island will look like, sound like, smell like it did on the day we took these photos. They serve as a small way to memorialize Coney Island’s 2020 season, from boardwalk to subway, from monument to memory.
