MOMMY IS MAD!!!

Stephanie Davidson reflects on parenting during a pandemic.

Shifting Ground was an open call for visual reports about how the events of 2020 and 2021 reconfigured our relationship with both public and private space. Select entries were posted on the League’s Instagram account.

Stephanie Davidson’s drawings document her experience of working from home with children.

She wrote:

For the first time since I had my kids, I can’t separate work and home life. No school, no daycare, no home office, not even a desk. Everything is mixed up and intertwined in the messiest way. For the first few months, I felt like a three-headed monster: one kid balanced on my shoulder, the other on my hip. Days were full of Zoom, emails, forts, food, fights, and the cat getting out. When I started to vacuum, the kids would yell “MOMMY IS MAD!!!” and rush to their rooms. Six months later, there’s a strange equilibrium.

These drawings were made to try to both express and reconcile the demands on caretakers like me, working-at-home. Daily situations can be absurd, painful, surreal, annoying, and lovely.
