League Prize 2023 Night 2: Daisy Ames, Sean Canty

The second evening of lectures by winners of “Uncomfortable,” the 2023 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers.

June 22, 2023

Recorded on June 22, 2023.

In this video, Daisy Ames of Studio Ames and Sean Canty of Studio Sean Canty discuss their practice through projects including:

Studio Ames:

  • Linee Occulte: Drawing Architecture, the design and curation of an architectural drawing exhibition focused on “hidden lines” revealing the hidden aspects of architecture as a profession and a process.
  • Three houses exploring three timber construction methods and their abilities to create new conceptions of space
  • Mass Timber Housing Project, a speculative research project that explores the feasibility of micro housing units.

Sean Canty:

  • Raynor Residence, a house renovation proposal to allow an elderly couple to age in place while creating space for their daughter and three grandchildren.
  • Block House Commons, a regenerative design imagining a new social and spatial organization for Cobbs Creek, a scarred block of Philadelphia infamous for the police bombing of 1985.
  • Edgar’s Sheds, an installation loosely based on two sheds constructed by Canty’s great-grandfather, which brings the history of black vernacular traditions, with their intertwining of reuse and care, into conversation with the voices of other practitioners at the Venice Biennial.

The presentations are followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A with 2023 Young Architects + Designers Committee member Jose Amozurrutia, founding principal of TO and teacher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The conversation touched on how techniques of representation are ways of knowing and the challenges of working in the arena of housing.
