The League Prize is an annual competition that has been organized by The Architectural League since 1981. Open to designers ten years or less out of school, it draws entrants from around North America.
Citygroup won a 2022 award.
Citygroup is an architecture collective founded in 2018 in New York City. Headquartered in a Lower East Side storefront, it partners with a wide variety of local organizations to develop and promote equitable design solutions to some of New York’s most pressing issues. Through design projects, public events, and grassroots activism, Citygroup aims to “interrogate the conditions that subjugate, alienate, and appropriate architects, architecture, and inhabitants of architecture,” according to its website.
Recent projects include:
- Plan Unplanned: Ideas for an Affordable Chinatown, an exhibition featuring a series of explanatory zoning maps and visualizations that articulate the impacts of community-based rezoning in Manhattan’s Chinatown;
- Dialogue Not Monologue, a debate series that invites architects and non-architects to discuss issues related to the city and the discipline;
- Form in Rem, an exhibition of work that re-draws and deconstructs the floor plan of One Manhattan Square, a new luxury residential skyscraper in the Lower East Side.
Organized as a non-hierarchical collective, Citygroup has no principal architects or directors. Participation defines membership in the collective.
Citygroup was selected as a winner of the AIA’s 2020 New Practices New York. Its work was featured in the 2019 Oslo Architecture Triennale.
