Operations Manager

The Architectural League, one of the country’s premier presenters of important work and ideas in architecture and urbanism, seeks a full-time Operations Manager to join its staff. As an integral member of the League team, the Operations Manager helps provide the organizational foundation for the League’s ambitious program of events, publications, and other projects. The League works to create stimulating opportunities for the presentation and discussion of significant work; encourage the development of young designers; increase openness and inclusion in architecture and help build a more just profession and discipline; and address critical issues in the built environment, including climate change.

The Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring the smooth functioning of the League office and staff on a day-to-day basis, and taking on longer projects to maximize the impact of League resources. Responsibilities include human resources management; working with the executive director and bookkeeper on financial management; hardware, software, and other equipment management; managing League assets including space, information, and archives, including working with a board committee on League history and archives; and ensuring that all staff have the environment and tools they need to carry out their work. The Operations Manager is the primary liaison with the League’s landlord and with vendors, and manages the League’s relationship with its payroll/benefits firm. The Operations Manager ensures that a variety of types of critical information for the League, including organizational policies, is kept up to date and accessible.

The position requires a well-organized person who can juggle many tasks simultaneously, while maintaining excellent attention to detail. The Operations Manager should enjoy interacting with a wide variety of people. The job demands strong writing skills and ease with digital technologies, with willingness to learn new software as required. Demonstrated interest in architecture and cities is a strong plus. While the League staff is currently working remotely, we anticipate returning to our office soon after the beginning of the new year, and therefore the Operations Manager must be located in, or willing to relocate to, the New York City region. We cannot pay relocation expenses. The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $70,000, depending on experience. Benefits include health insurance, transit subsidy, and paid time off. For the right individual, this position could be shaped to accommodate other obligations, such as study in a graduate program.

To apply, please fill out the application form and short questions. We strongly encourage people of color, LGBTQ individuals, people with disabilities, and others who may contribute to the diversity of perspectives on the League staff to apply. We will begin reviewing applications immediately and will continue to accept applications until the position is filled; interviews will begin in January. We would like the new Operations Manager to start work in early 2022.
