The League’s monthly After Hours events, formerly called First Fridays, are informal social gatherings that allow members to visit the offices of leading design practices and see work on the boards.

Solid Objectives Idenburg Liu (SO–IL) is an architecture studio with offices in New York and Amsterdam. Founded in 2008 by Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu, the practice approaches each commission as an opportunity to “rethink conventions and to design spaces that support more open, collective, and sustainable ways of living.” Committed to, in the firm’s own words, shaping “a stronger civic realm,” SO–IL has developed a diverse portfolio that encompasses cultural, civic, residential, commercial, and educational facilities. The firm’s collaborations with artists, curators, and cultural institutions contribute to the craft, material, and experiential quality of its architecture.

Completed projects include:

Amant Four buildings united by exteriors composed of bricks, galvanized steel bars, and concrete make up this cultural incubator, which contains artist studios, galleries, offices, and courtyards.

Las Americas A housing project with 60 condo units, two interior courtyards, parking, and a commercial base located at the city center of León, Mexico, that aims to introduce vertical dwelling as an alternative housing model for the region.

Site Verrier A collaboration with FREAKS, this multidisciplinary cultural center located in northeastern France connects three separate institutions’ ground floors to frame a public plaza, with spaces for art installations and concerts.

Current projects include:

Williams College Museum of Art SO–IL’s design for this new facility incorporates an exposed mass timber structure and will adhere to the Living Building Challenge 4.0/Core Green Building Certification standards.

CubeHouse This 13-story timber office building atop an existing parking garage, located in the Zuidas business district in Amsterdam, will incorporate 75% biobased structural materials, with rooftop and façade-integrated solar panels generating 80% of the building’s energy needs.

Stanton Yards The firm’s masterplan will transform four former industrial buildings in Detroit, MI, into a cultural hub containing spaces for art studios, workshops, performance, exhibition, and gathering alongside a working marina.
