League Prize 2022: Night 1

With representatives of Citygroup and Nathan Friedman and Francisco Quiñones of Departamento del Distrito.

August 2, 2022

Recorded on June 15, 2022.

The first evening of lectures by winners of the 2022 Architectural League Prize.

The League Prize is an annual competition that has been organized by The Architectural League since 1981. Open to designers ten years or less out of school, it draws entrants from around North America.

In this video, representatives of Citygroup (New York, NY) and Nathan Friedman and Francisco Quiñones of Departamento del Distrito (Mexico City, Mexico) discuss projects including:

Citygroup:

  • Plan Unplanned: Ideas for an Affordable Chinatown, an exhibition featuring a series of explanatory zoning maps and visualizations that articulate the impacts of community-based rezoning in Manhattan’s Chinatown;
  • Dialogue Not Monologue, a debate series that invites architects and non-architects to discuss issues related to the city and the discipline;
  • Form in Rem, an exhibition of work that re-draws and deconstructs the floor plan of One Manhattan Square, a new luxury residential skyscraper in the Lower East Side.

Departamento del Distrito:

  • En-Medio, a free publication series that highlights the delicate status of modernist architectural heritage in Mexico City;
  • Casa Georgina, a residential project that integrates a series of stone ruins on a steep slope in the northern Mexican state of San Luis Potosí;
  • Miracles, Now, a multimedia installation that examines the contemporary state of modernist-era preservation in Mexico City.

The presentations are followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A with 2022 Young Architects + Designers Committee member Gabriel Cuéllar. Cuéllar is a co-founder of Cadaster and a professor-in-practice at the University of Minnesota.
