Current Work is a lecture series featuring leading figures in the worlds of architecture, urbanism, design, and art.

The spring 2022 Current Work series focuses on architectural practices designing museums, schools, and cultural centers that contend with the complex legacies of place.

In this video, Michael Maltzan, founder and director of Los Angeles-based Michael Maltzan Architecture (MMA), presents a series of cultural, housing, academic, and infrastructure projects that strive to articulate connections and bridge historical divisions in individuals, disciplines, and communities. Shared works include Star Apartments, a mixed-use complex in downtown Los Angeles whose program includes social services, community recreational facilities, and residential units for formerly unhoused individuals; Rice University’s Moody Center for the Arts, a facility dedicated to the advancement of transdisciplinary collaboration between the arts, sciences, and humanities; and Sixth Street Viaduct, a 3,500-foot bridge and public park spanning downtown Los Angeles.

The presentation is followed by a conversation with architectural consultant and critic Karen Stein. Stein and Maltzan touch on how MMA has escaped being pigeon-holed, as well as the breadth of architecture and its current state.
