The Architectural League of NY seeks an enthusiastic, engaged Communications Manager
The Communications Manager reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Program Director, Editor-in-Chief of Urban Omnibus, Managing Director, special programs managers and program associate. The role of the Communications Manager is to devise and execute a coordinated, timely, and effective digital, social media, and print communications strategy that offers a clear and powerful image of the League’s work, and that informs and helps build the League’s constituencies and audiences. The League conceives and executes a wide variety of programs and projects, ranging from public lectures, to the online publication Urban Omnibus, to design studies and competitions. Effectively conveying the breadth and diversity of the League’s work is a significant challenge, and an important measure of success in this position.
Specific responsibilities include:
General
- Develop, implement, and evaluate the organization’s annual communications plan for both the organization at-large and specific programs; maintain a communications calendar; coordinate with other staff to achieve communication goals
- Seek to ensure that all communications reflect and support the League’s mission, ethos, and voice
- Working with the senior staff, identify, profile, engage, and expand the League’s audience segments
- Identify metrics for successful audience engagement and growth, as well as metrics to determine success of digitally-based programming; monitor and report metrics
- Continuously improve and enforce a League style manual
Website
- Ensure that archleague.org functions effectively as the League’s most important communication vehicle, accurately conveying institutional identity and program and project information
- Act as webmaster; be continuously informed about and able to shape and update all parts of website
- Maintain all website hosting and domain registration accounts
- Produce all information sections of archleague.org, including preparing text and images (often in cooperation with program associate and others) for program announcement, competition announcement, project announcement, “about,” and support pages.
- Prepare/supervise the preparation of all texts and images for information pages of website, including program, competition, project announcements, “about” pages, and support pages
- Working with the UO staff, ensure that they are able to publish UO to full capacity on urbanomnibus.net
- Manage the League’s website designer retainer and manage and oversee requests for updates and subsequent website improvements
Digital and social media
- Plan, write, circulate for comments, and send the weekly League e-newsletter and other e-card announcements
- Coordinate with UO staff on UO newsletter, which will be produced by UO staff
- Develop overall social media strategy, write and post program and institutional updates and other news on League Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms
- Continuously research, recommend and develop new digital outlets and strategies for League communications
- Track and evaluate specific analytics on the newsletter and social media and conceive measures to improve content and utility
- Manage subscriptions to the e-newsletter and other outlets
Print communications
- Working with program staff, create an annual plan for print program series announcements, and strategize how digital and print communications interact and complement one another
- Write, assign, and compile content for print communications; edit, proofread, and manage production of any program series announcements
- Work with designers and printers to produce print communications
- Manage distribution and mailing of print materials
- Develop flyers for individual League programs, for distribution to visitors to office and at events
Communications at events
- Coordinate with Managing Director and program staff what materials will be available for distribution at League programs
- Greet or sherpa any press as necessary
- Create or manage program handouts as appropriate for distribution at events
- Work with Managing Director to plan and prepare pre-lecture screen images for events
Press and publicity
- Consulting as necessary with other staff, write and distribute press releases to publicize League events and projects; follow up with targeted press contacts
- Serve as point person on all press inquiries and press relationships
- Maintain up-to-date press listings in Patron Manager
- Coordinate photography of all League programs and events and maintain image archive (hard copy and electronic) of League program and project images
- Build and maintain hard copy and digital clipping files of League press notices and reviews
- Plan and assemble press packets as needed
Qualifications: Prior work experience producing digital media is required. Excellent writing and editing skills required. Knowledge of contemporary architecture and design highly desired. Salary based on qualifications and experience.
