Accustomed to visualizations of future megaprojects and photographs of freshly inaugurated buildings, we are less likely to notice, as we walk down the street, how buildings, landscapes, policies and programs, and infrastructural systems shape the urban environment. What is the role of sustained visual inquiry into the physical city today?

For this event, photographers and Urban Omnibus contributors Kris Graves, Stanley Greenberg, and Anna Shteynshleyger will discuss their work as research on the urban condition. What do their photographic investigations and interpretations prompt us to see differently?

Panelists

Kris Graves is a photographer and publisher based in New York and London. He has been published and exhibited globally, including the National Portrait Gallery in London, England; Aperture Gallery, New York; University of Arizona, Tucson; and Brooklyn Museum, New York; among others. Permanent collections include the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Brooklyn Museum, New York; The Wedge Collection, Toronto; and Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania.

Stanley Greenberg is a Brooklyn-based photographer and author of numerous books, including Codex New York (2019), Time Machines (2011), Under Construction (2010), Waterworks: A Photographic Journey Through New York’s Hidden Water System (2003), and Invisible New York: The Hidden Infrastructure of the City (1998). His photographs are held in prominent collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New York Public Library, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.

Anna Shteynshleyger is an artist working through photography and other media. She has had solo presentations at 57W57ARTS, The Renaissance Society, the University of Chicago, Dvir Gallery, Tel Aviv, Israel and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL. Shteynshleyger is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation award. She is an Associate Professor of Photography at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where she currently lives.

Danielle Jackson is a critic, researcher, and arts administrator. She is the co-founder and former co-director of the Bronx Documentary Center, a photography gallery and educational space. Formerly, she ran the Cultural Department at Magnum Photos NY.
