Past as Prologue was a symposium held in November 2014 on the occasion of Michael Graves’s fiftieth year in practice. Organized by The Architectural League and hosted by Parsons The New School for Design, the day brought together architects, designers, educators, writers, and others to celebrate Graves’ remarkable body of work.
In this video, Francisco Sanin traces the evolution of Graves’s career, from his 1965 Linear City proposal, developed with Peter Eisenman, to his contemporary work as a “reluctant healthcare expert.” The overview contextualizes Graves’ design career within the prominent theoretical and pedagogical influences of his time. It also foregrounds the impact of his post-graduate residency at the American Academy of Rome, as well as the prominent role of drawing and painting in his practice.
Sanin is a professor at the Syracuse School of Architecture and the director of the Syracuse Architecture London program.
