The Belgian collective rethinks the possibilities of adaptive reuse.
The League’s monthly After Hours events, formerly called First Fridays, are informal social gatherings that allow members to visit the offices of leading design practices and see work on the boards.
TYLin is a global engineering and advisory firm that works across new construction, renovation, adaptive reuse, historic preservation, transportation infrastructure, and specialty structures. The firm’s Buildings Sector was founded by Bob Silman as a one-person practice in 1966. Now a part of TYLin, the office comprises over 200 people, including more than 70 licensed engineers and 20 LEED accredited professionals. TYLin’s Buildings Sector describes themselves as “committed collaborators,” with a diverse portfolio of projects across North, South, and Central America.
Completed projects include:
Domino Sugar Refinery An adaptive reuse project in collaboration with Practice for Architecture and Urbanism, TYLin engineers designed a new 15-story steel and concrete structure within the brick masonry shell of an 1880s refinery, creating new office space and a rooftop event venue.
1490 Southern Boulevard Located on a sloping site in Crotona Park, this affordable housing development for seniors contains 114 permanently affordable units and features a 2,500 square-foot landscaped terrace, in collaboration with Bernheimer Architecture.
Michigan Central Station TYLin provided structural engineering services for this large-scale renovation, which included the concourse structure, office tower, main waiting room with Guastavino tile vaults, basement, and an assessment and repair strategy for the building’s exterior.
Current and upcoming projects include:
Walter Gladwin Recreation Center This 36,000 square-foot mass timber facility, in collaboration with Marvel Architects, the NYC Department of Design and Construction, and NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, will house a gymnasium, dance studio, media lab, and other amenities for Tremont-area community groups.
Liberty Landing TYLin is providing structural services, from schematic design through construction administration, for the conversion of a former correctional facility into affordable housing with 124 units, designed by COOKFOX Architects.
Manresa Island In collaboration with Bjarke Ingels Group and SCAPE, this project will transform an industrial peninsula into a 125-acre public park, including renovation of the site’s existing buildings to create event spaces, research facilities, and recreation areas.
