Cameron Blaylock bikes the boroughs for different perspectives on pandemic-era New York.
Shifting Ground was an open call for visual reports about how the events of 2020 and 2021 reconfigured our relationship with both public and private space. Select entries were posted on the League’s Instagram account.
Cameron Blaylock submitted scenes of COVID-era New York taken from a camera fastened to his bike.
He wrote:
I, along with many other New Yorkers, stopped taking the subway and started biking everywhere when the pandemic hit. By late spring, it was clear that the newly transformed New York City social landscape was happening mostly outside and above ground. After a few instances of biking past scenes that I wish I had photographed, I wondered what it would look like to take photos of the city while biking. I merged a clamp, tripod head, and a cable release and strapped a 35mm camera to my handlebars. To take a photo, I simply press the cable release while keeping both hands on the handlebars. This method affords me vantage points of the city and my fellow citizens that I hadn’t experienced as a street photographer on foot.
