The League thanks the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons The New School for Design for co-sponsoring and hosting the League Prize exhibition and lectures.

The second evening of lectures by winners of the Architectural League Prize, features Marc Fornes of MARC FORNES / THEVERYMANY, Luis Callejas of Lcla Office, and Bryan Young of Young Projects. The League Prize is one of North America’s most prestigious awards for young architects. This year’s theme for the portfolio competition, Range, reflects the perception of young architects’ careers as explorations of “potential boundaries with practices that are radical, that search the edges of the discipline to find its limits.”

A reception with the opportunity to view the exhibition will follow the lecture.

A Country of Cities: A Manifesto for an Urban America
Vishaan Chakrabarti
Introduced by Thom Mayne
1.5 AIA and New York State CEUs

Ticket sale proceeds for this event will help support the League’s online publication, Urban Omnibus. A Country of Cities was first developed as a series of opinion pieces on Urban Omnibus.

Vishaan Chakrabarti will discuss ideas from his new book A Country of Cities: A Manifesto for an Urban America, published by Metropolis Books. With illustrations by SHoP Architects, where Chakrabarti is Partner, and a foreword by Sir Norman Foster, A Country of Cities argues that, “by removing the legal, economic, and moral imbalances that incentivize sprawl, we can realize a more prosperous, more sustainable and more equitable nation.”

Today, the United States is divided, a country of countries characterized by bitter partisanship, economic decline, environmental degradation and growing social inequity. The same tired debates define our political rhetoric, but little is said about how architecture, urbanism and development — i.e., about the way in which we use land — have fueled this national malaise. Despite all the changes politicians promise to enact, altering our sprawling, gluttonous lifestyle is not among them. Our Federal policies continue to perilously fuel a country of highways, houses and hedges, and we are stuck in traffic while emerging economies are speeding past us. ‘A Country of Cities’ contemplates a different nation, one of trains, towers and trees…Author Vishaan Chakrabarti passionately and straightforwardly advocates for this alternate universe and for the essential precept that cities are the silver bullet for the nation’s — and the planet’s — ills.
-Metropolis Books

Vishaan Chakrabarti is a Partner at SHoP Architects and is the Marc Holliday Associate Professor of Real Estate Development and the Director of CURE, the Center for Urban Real Estate, at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation.

Thom Mayne is the founder of Morphosis. His most recent book, Combinatory Urbanism: The Complex Behavior of Collective Form, serves as both a manifesto on urban design and a look at the office’s urban-scale projects.

This program is organized by the New York Transit Museum and is co-sponsored by the Architectural League.

The New York Transit Museum’s new exhibition Grand Central Sketchbook highlights the winning drawings of a competition sponsored by the Transit Museum and the Architectural League. These designs, all featured in a limited edition Moleskine sketchbook, evoke a range of narratives, unusual vantage points, and the complexity and dynamism of a working transit hub. The work forms a collective portrait that captures Grand Central Terminal’s historical legacy and current functionality. For more information on the competition and the winning work click here. This conversation between jurors and winners of the drawing competition will give an in-depth look at the work on view.

Join Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates at its office for drinks, informal conversation, and a behind the scenes look at recent and upcoming projects. This program is part of First Friday, a monthly opportunity for League members to visit the offices of leading design practices to see work on the boards and learn more about the offices’ organization and design processes. These informal social gatherings feature happy hour drinks arranged by the host offices. Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates is a landscape architecture practice with offices in Brooklyn, New York, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Working across a range of landscape scales, the firm has applied its interest in “integrated sustainability” to “achieve an ecological urbanism” with its larger projects. Recent work includes: the master plans for Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts and Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn, where the firm also designed Piers 1 and 6; the G. W. Bush Presidential Center grounds in Dallas, Texas; the CT Water Treatment Facility in New Haven, Connecticut; and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri. The firm is the recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Award, as well as numerous AIA and ASLA awards, including the ASLA Analysis and Planning Honor Award for the Brooklyn Bridge Park. To learn more about the work of the office, watch Michael Van Valkenburgh’s 2011 Current Work lecture.

This program is organized by The Museum of the City of New York and co-sponsored by the Architectural League.

This panel discussion celebrates Ada Louise Huxtable’s impact on New York City.

Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic at The New York Times and, later, The Wall Street Journal, Ada Louise Huxtable (1921 – 2013) wrote for nearly fifty years on the moral, social, political, and economic factors at play in the development of New York City and its architecture. Huxtable’s balanced interest in historic preservation and contemporary design excellence produced thoughtful and, at times, sharp criticisms of the changes in New York’s buildings, neighborhoods, and urban landscape. She energized and drew attention to the debates over controversial projects such as the demolition of Penn Station, Co-op City, and the (re)development of the World Trade Center.

Hilary Ballon, moderator, is Professor of Urban Studies and Architecture and University Professor at New York University. She is also Deputy Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi.

Stanton Eckstut is Principal at Perkins Eastman Architects.

Donald Elliott was Chairman of the City Planning Commission under Mayor John V. Lindsay.

Lynne Sagalyn is Director of the MBA Real Estate Program and Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate, Columbia University.

Suzanne Stephens is a deputy editor of Architectural Record.

Theater of Architecture
Hugh Hardy, Jim Houghton, Charles Renfro, Michael Sorkin
Introduced by Joe Melillo
1.5 AIA and New York State CEUs

A discussion on the occasion of the publication of Hugh Hardy’s book Theater of Architecture, which uses a variety of his projects to explore his thesis that the profession of architecture’s “true strength lies in the building of communities…by enhancing experience.” Built forms, according to Hardy, “are the language of architecture, but without a connection with public use they lose meaning.” This panel will use the experiential aspects of theater design—façades and public spaces as well as the auditoria—as a starting point for a discussion of architecture in the broadest sense, particularly the use of public space.

Hugh Hardy is the author of Theater of Architecture and founder of H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture.
Jim Houghton is the founding artistic director of Signature Theatre Company in New York.
Joe Melillo is the executive producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Charles Renfro is a principal of Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
Michael Sorkin is a critic, author, and founder of Michael Sorkin Studio. Sorkin is also the Director of the Graduate Urban Design Program at the City College of New York.

Folly 2013 Opening

The Architectural League and Socrates Sculpture Park invite you to the picnic opening of tree wood, the 2013 winner of Folly designed by Toshihiro Oki architect with team members Toshihiro Oki, Jen Wood, and Jared Diganci.

Folly is a competition co-sponsored by the Architectural League and Socrates Sculpture Park that invites emerging architects and designers to propose contemporary interpretations of the architectural folly, traditionally a fanciful, small-scale building or pavilion sited in a garden or landscape to frame a view or serve as a conversation piece. The winning architects received a grant and two-month residency at Socrates in addition to the opportunity to build a full-scale project in the park. For more on this year’s competition, including a feature on this year’s finalist and exemplary submissions, click here.
