The office imagines other worlds and engages the design of architecture through telling stories, conflating design, representation, theory, criticism, history, and taste into cartoon pages. These cartoon narratives swerve into the physical world through architectural installations, models, and small buildings. Lai was the recipient of the LeFevre Fellowship. His work has been widely exhibited and published. Lai’s graphic novel/manifesto, Citizens of No Place, will be published by Princeton Architectural Press with a grant from the Graham Foundation. Draft II of this book has been archived at the New Museum as a part of the show Younger Than Jesus. Jimenez Lai is currently an Assistant Professor at University of Illinois at Chicago and graduated with a M.Arch from University of Toronto.

Walking Tour — SOLD OUT
5:30 p.m.
RSVP required

Talk & Reception
7:00 p.m.
594 Broadway, Suite 607

The Internet has changed everything. Yet the network itself, its physical nuts and bolts, remains utterly obscured, hidden in secret locations and behind closed doors. In his new book, Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet, journalist Andrew Blum goes inside the Internet’s physical infrastructure–its buildings–and flips on the lights. Tubes is a book about real places on the map: their sounds and smells, their storied pasts, their physical details, and the people who work there.

Blum will lead a walking tour of the Internet’s infrastructure in lower Manhattan, followed by a short talk and reception at the Architectural League.

Andrew Blum is a journalist writing about architecture, design, technology, urbanism, art, and travel. He is a contributing editor at Metropolis and Urban Omnibus, and his articles and essays have appeared in Wired, The New York Times, Popular Science and Architectural Record, among many other publications.

Admission and Reservations
Admission for both the walking tour and the reception is free and open to the public. Reservations are required for the walking tour. Space is limited to 25 people. Reserve a space by emailing: rsvp@archleague.org. Reservations are not necessary for the talk and reception.

Co-sponsored by Studio-X NYC.

Situated Technologies: Beneath and Beyond Big Data
A symposium with Philip Beesley, David Benjamin, Laura Forlano, Usman Haque, Natalie Jeremijenko, Omar Khan, Laura Kurgan, Helen Nissenbaum, Trebor Scholz, Mark Shepard, and Kazys Varnelis
Saturday, April 28, 2012
2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Rose Auditorium, The Cooper Union
41 Cooper Square
3 AIA and New York State CEUs

The Architectural League invites you to celebrate the publication of the final pamphlet in the Situated Technologies Pamphlets Series, “Modulated Cities: Networked Spaces, Reconstituted Subjects,” by Helen Nissenbaum and Kazys Varnelis. Bringing together contributors to the Situated Technologies Project throughout its first six years, this half-day event will address current issues surrounding situated technologies and the increasing entanglement of data, technology, and the built environment, and attempt to identify future trajectories for their evolution.

The afternoon will begin with a conversation between pamphlet authors Helen Nissenbaum and Kazys Varnelis, moderated by Trebor Scholz, addressing the redefinition of privacy in the age of big data and the networked, geo-spatial environment, and questioning the implications for the construction of contemporary subjectivity. Usman Haque, Natalie Jeremijenko, Laura Kurgan, and Mark Shepard will then present a series of case studies on open data and the process of making data public, focusing on distributed sensing initiatives and contrasting them with centralized programs managed by government agencies. Finally, Philip Beesley, David Benjamin, Laura Forlano, and Omar Khan will identify the challenges of developing data literacy among the next generation of architects, addressing these issues through an expanded architectural curriculum for the 21st century.

Tickets
Tickets are free for League members and students with a current ID; $20 for non-members. Members may reserve a ticket by e-mailing: rsvp@archleague.org.
This event is co-sponsored by Eyebeam Art + Technology Center.

About the Situated Technologies Project
The Situated Technologies Project, co-organized by Omar Khan, Trebor Scholz, and Mark Shepard in partnership with the Architectural League, explores the implications of ubiquitous computing for architecture and urbanism: How is our experience of the city and the choices we make in it affected by mobile communications, pervasive media, ambient informatics, and other “situated” technologies? How will the ability to design increasingly responsive environments alter the way architects conceive of space? What do architects need to know about urban computing and what do technologists need to know about cities? The project began with a 3-day symposium in fall 2006 and continued with the publication of the Situated Technologies Pamphlets, a nine-part series of conversations between leading practitioners and researchers from architecture, art, technology, sociology, and related fields. In fall 2009, Toward the Sentient City, an exhibition curated by Mark Shepard and organized by the League, presented five newly commissioned installations and projects that explored the evolving relationship between ubiquitous computing, architecture, and the city. A book based on the exhibition is available from MIT Press.

Structural engineer and Design Director and co-founder of AKTII, Hanif Kara will present his approach to engineering in the lecture: “The Engineering of Empathy.” Kara will discuss the evolving relationship between architects and engineers brought on by new struggles and challenges with technological advancement, economy, and ecology in the past decade. Kara will elaborate on what he refers to as the “strategic model” of practice, which, he explains, requires the engineer to “sit in the mind” of the architect or client, while thinking with the expert knowledge of the engineer.

His work includes collaboration on Foster + Partners’ Sheikh Zayed National Museum, Zaha Hadid’s Phaeno Science Centre, Thomas Heatherwick’s UK Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai, FOA’s Ravensbourne Design College, and David Chipperfield’s Turner Contemporary Museum.

In addition to professional practice, Hanif Kara is the Pierce Anderson Lecturer in Creative Engineering at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and Visiting Professor for Architectural Technology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He is a commissioner for CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) and was the first engineer to be a judge for the annual RIBA Stirling Prize 2011. He serves on the board of trustees of the Architecture Foundation and has been an advisor to the Aga Khan Development Network.

Support
The World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 satellite events in New York City have been produced as a collaboration between the Architectural League of New York, the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter, the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York, the Consulate General of Finland in New York, and the Museum of Finnish Architecture. The events form a part of the 10-month-long New Finnish Design CITY project organized by the Cultural Institute and the Consulate General. Additional program support has been provided by TRESPA.

Architectural League programs are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
