Architects Mary Burnham and Jeffrey Murphy and Deputy Vice Chancellor Hilary Ballon will lead a tour of 19 Washington Square North, the New York City ‘portal’ to the NYU Abu Dhabi campus.  Evie Klein will give an overview on how this project fits within the context of NYU’s design initiatives.  Working within the narrow footprint of a New York City townhouse, the architects created generous open spaces designed for maximum flexibility with layouts that are easily transformed. The integration of state-of-the-art telecom technology establishes a direct video link between New York and Abu Dhabi.

19 WSN hosts lectures, research workshops, exhibitions, and other public programs that reinforce the curricular and research initiatives of NYUAD; fosters collaborations with colleagues at NYU in New York; and addresses developments in Abu Dhabi and the broad Middle East.

Murphy Burnham & Buttrick is an architecture, planning and interior design firm based in New York City. Recent and current projects including the masterplan and renovation of St. Hilda’s and St Hugh’s School, Manhattan; PS 287Q, Queens; townhouses in Manhattan; Row Houses for Habitat for Humanity, The Bronx exemplify the firm’s underlying design philosophy “to consistently seek to employ innovative, sustainable solutions that enrich the human experience and minimize each project’s environmental impact.”

Hilary Ballon serves as the principal representative of NYU Abu Dhabi in New York, working to ensure a strong connection between the two campuses. In addition, Ballon also focuses on curriculum development, and planning the new NYU Abu Dhabi campus on Saadiyat Island and other facilities. Ballon is a University Professor, and a professor of architecture and urban studies at NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

Evie Klein oversees the office of Strategic Assessment, Planning & Design at NYU.   In recent years, the University has focused its efforts on being stewards of its historic facilities.  Her office has also recently completed a series of projects within existing university-held buildings that “bring an urbanistic and design sensibility to the ground floor spaces around Washington Square.”
