First Friday
Hollwich Kushner

Join Hollwich Kushner at its office for drinks, conversation, and a behind the scenes look at their ongoing work. The League’s First Fridays are monthly opportunities for League members to visit the offices of leading design practices to see work on the boards and learn more about the offices’ organization and design processes. These informal social gatherings feature brief office tours and presentations along with happy hour drinks arranged by the host office.

Founded by Matthias Hollwich and Marc Kushner in 2007 and based in Lower Manhattan, Hollwich Kushner designs cultural, commercial, and residential projects. The firm attempts to create work that foregrounds local context while prioritizing the social experience of users. In addition to their winning design for the 2012 MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program, Hollwich Kushner designed the Pines Pavilion in Fire Island, the recently opened Pennovation Center in Philadelphia, and the CCS Bard Hessel Museum in Annandale-on-Hudson.

Their projects currently under construction include the Journal Square towers in Jersey City, NJ (in collaboration with Handel Architects) and the Williamsburg Tech Hub in Brooklyn (in collaboration with Gensler). Kushner has spoken at both the TED and PSFK Conferences. In 2016, Penguin Books published Hollwich’s New Aging – Live Smarter to Live Better Forever, a guide to how design and lifestyle changes can make aging a graceful and fulfilling process. Both Hollwich and Kushner collaborated with KKLD in 2009 to found Architizer, a global digital platform for architects to share and discuss their work.
