The Architectural League of New York invites you to an information session on the Deborah J. Norden Fund, an annual program of the League that supports independent travel and research for recent graduates in architecture, architectural history, and urban studies. Past grantees Julian Palacio and Kerry O’Connor will discuss their projects, followed by a Q&A about the grant process with League staff.

Julian Palacio received the 2012 Norden Fund grant for his proposal Material Tour de Force: The Work of Eladio Dieste, an exploration of work by Eladio Dieste in Uruguay. Through an investigation into the material and structural innovation of Dieste’s buildings, Palacio considered the legacy and contemporary relevance of a practice rooted in efficiency, invention, and elegance.

Kerry O’Connor received the 2014 Norden Fund grant for his proposal The Plečnik Projects: Public Experience and the Section of Water. O’Connor traveled to Ljublijana to study Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik’s infrastructure systems along the Ljubljanica and Gradaščica rivers. Through first-hand observation and documentation, as well as exploration of existing archives, O’Connor examined Plečnik’s approaches to the water edge and the relationship between water and the city.

The fund was established in 1995 in memory of architect and arts administrator Deborah Norden. The prize awards up to $5,000 annually in travel and study grants to students and recent graduates in the fields of architecture, architectural history, and urban studies.

The application deadline is Thursday, April 16, 2015 midnight EST.
