Emerging Voices 2015
Architect, Founder and Director, Mediated Matter Group, MIT Media Lab
Neri Oxman founded the Mediated Matter Group at the MIT Media Lab in 2010. Concerned with “nature-inspired design and design-inspired nature,” the group conducts research at the intersection of computational design, digital fabrication, materials, and synthetic biology and “applies that knowledge to design across scales from the micro scale to the building scale.” Oxman coined the term Material Ecology to describe her research area, offering methods for the generation of informed relations between form, material, structure, and the environment across scales and application domains. Past group projects include Cartesian Wax and Raycounting from the Material Ecology Project, exhibited in the Design and the Elastic Mind show at MoMA, and the Silk Pavilion, a cocoon-like dome digitally co-fabricated with 6,500 silkworms. Ongoing projects include the Ocean Pavilion and the Glass Pavilion demonstrating, for the first time, large-scale robotic fabrication of crustacean-derived materials and glass, respectively.
Oxman is Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab, where she heads the Mediated Matter Group. She was named to ICON‘s list of the 20 most influential architects to shape our future in 2009; was selected as one of the “100 most creative people” by Fast Company in 2009; and was named a “Revolutionary Mind” by SEED Magazine in 2008. Her work is part of the permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Centre Georges Pompidou; and The Smithsonian, among others. She was the recipient of the 2014 Vilcek Prize for Design and the 2014 Women in Design award among many other awards for her pioneering designs. Neri Oxman received her PhD in design computation as a Presidential Fellow at MIT, after receiving her AA Dipl. at the Architectural Association, London. She previously studied medicine at the Hebrew University and architecture at the Technion Institute of Technology in Israel.
