In its offices on January 11th 2012 the Architectural League presented a panel discussion among emerging architects and designers on the topic of pavilions, follies, and other small-scale, contemporary projects. Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem of Phu Hoang Office and Rachely Rotem Studio; Jing Liu and Florian Idenburg of SO-IL; and Michael Loverich of Bittertang all presented recent and current work. Rachely Rotem is the founder and principal of Rachely Rotem Studio, llc. The design practice, based in New York City and Tel Aviv, has projects in architectural design, interiors and urban environments. Phu Hoang is the founder and principal of Phu Hoang Office, a New York-based architecture practice with projects in architecture, interior, and installation design. Here Rotem and Hoang present a number of collaborations including “Exhale Pavilion,” the beachfront stage for 2010 Art Basel Miami and “Lighter Than Air,” a pop-up public space to be built on a barge in Fort Point Channel, Boston in September 2012.

Solid Objectives – Idenburg Liu (SO – IL) is an idea driven design office founded by Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu in 2008. The firm has worked on an array of projects ranging in scale from the master plan of a cultural campus in Shanghai, China to a series of prints for the Guggenheim Museum. In this excerpt, SO-IL present “Pole Dance,” a temporary environment and multimedia installation at MoMA PS1, the “Flockr” pavilion in Beijing, and “Tricolonnade,” an interactive installation for the 2011 Shenzen Hong Kong Biennial.

Michael Loverich is co-founder of Bittertang with Antonio Torres. Bittertang strives to bring humor and pleasure to the built environment by digging deep into the sensual world that surrounds us; extracting rich and hilarious fodder from overlooked eras that have contributed integral matter to the production of architectural atmospheres. In this video, Loverich presents his project “Burble Bup,” the City of Dreams Pavilion on Governors Island (2011). Bittertang won the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects and Designers in 2010.
