Sue Ann Kahn and Jonas Salk at the forum on the proposed addition to the Salk Institute

“A group of about 135 architects, critics, and scholars gathered at the Urban Center…two weeks ago to meet with Jonas Salk….At the meeting, which was sponsored by the Architectural League, Dr. Salk presented a slightly modified version of the plan [for the addition]…and listened as members of the audience voiced their opposition to it….The dynamics of this meeting were complex. Architects seldom criticize one another’s work publicly….Moreover, this is not the first time that architects have spoken out against a proposed addition to a Kahn building. In 1989 a plan to expand the Kahn Art Museum….also aroused strong opposition. Though the plan was subsequently abandoned, those who opposed it were subjected to bitter accusations of ‘East Coast elitism’.” Herbert Muschamp, The New York Times, November 16, 1992
