Plans for Elevated Roadway in Chelsea are Exhibited in the 14th Annual Exhibition

1899

Drawing of proposed Chelsea improvements showing elevated roadway, exhibited at 14th Annual Exhibition.

“It has been the custom of this league to give a series of dinners…[where] improvements that would benefit the city would be discussed and made public through the press. Many of the plans discussed by the league in the past have been found to be feasible, artistic, and economical, and the municipality has thereby picked up many a valuable hint which has been put to practical use. At its dinner the other night, a number of addresses were made on the subject, ‘The Water Front of New York and Its Future Embellishments.’ Among them was one…that set forth a project that combined a rapid transit system for New York City, freight lines along the wharves,…an elevated boulevard for bicycles and light driving, [and] a new system of dockhouses, piers, and pierhouses.”The New York Times, November 14, 1898
